Thanks for visiting! Me and one of the Himba women. Look at her beautiful red-tinted skin!
The Himba are a tribe of nomadic pastoralists who inhabit the Kaokoland area of Namibia. The Himba are actually descendants of a group of Herero herders who fled into the remote north-west after been displaced by the Nama. The Himba have clung to their traditions and the beautiful Himba women are noted for their intricate hairstyles which and traditional jewellery.
It is without doubt one of the nicest places I've gone for Africa. North of Namibia, difficult to access, there are some spectacular waterfalls. Next to them the primitive tribe of the Himba and their ancient customs that are sold to the dollar.
Let me explain. The Himba are a semi-nomadic tribe living in the northwest region of Kunene, also referred to as Kaokoland in Namibia. This region only has a population density of one person per every 2 square kilometres. As a result of their isolation and secluded lifestyle they still hold to their culture and traditional way of life.
The very last thing I wanted to do in Namibia was visit the Himbas. We pulled to the side of the road for her hungover friend to lean against the dusty van. We were a group of eight, on our way outside of Swakopmund to go sandboarding down the dunes when visiting a Himba village was mentioned.

An Australian photographer whose pictures of breastfeeding women have been banned from Facebook says the social networking site is wrong to appoint itself arbiter of what constitutes art. Melbourne-based art dealer and photographer Christopher Rimmer travelled to Africa to shoot pictures for an upcoming exhibition documenting the continent's western aspirations, their affect on Africa's natural environment and tribal culture. It is the women that take responsibility to carry on this culture. This red cream is applied twice a day and a Himba woman never wash in water. Intimate wash consists of a homemade perfume made of herbs and aromatic branches, mashed with embers and then they let the smoke cover all parts of the body. To clean the abdomen they just sit on top of a barrel of burning perfume for a while.

One always approaches visits to tribal villages with mixed feelings. It is undignified to watch a human zoo, but on the other hand, Himba culture is so unique, and their customs so special, that without this visit one would have had a huge loophole in the knowledge of Namibia. And, buying their artesanal products certainly helps.
